2015 TERM 1 OVERVIEW

Minasan Akemashite omedetou gozaimasu! Happy New Year!

We have another busy year planned in our Japanese classroom. Reiko is thanfully still working with us for the next six weeks before she has to return to Japan. Please take the time to speak to Reiko and ask her anything you like about Japan and its culture and language.
WALT AND WILF
In our Japanese classes this year the students will hear the new terms we are using called WALT and WILF. These terms will be used to explain to the students at the start of the lesson, what they are learning today (WALT) and what I am looking for (WILF). This will help to clearly outline what they need to focus on for the lesson and what the expectations are of them.

EDMODO
Students from year 5-7 will again be using Edmodo to collaborate with one another and extend their Japanese learning with the focus on being able to source information I have put in a library, which is called “folders”, and use appropriately.

Keiko and Kenzo
Our two Japanese dolls will again go on home visits with the Junior primary with the aim of the program to discuss Japanese in the home and to create a word bank for the students to use in class.

Year 2
This term we will be working on students sharing information about themselves in guided group activities to support their understanding and to convey meaning. Students will locate items of information in simple texts and create bilingual texts in the classroom using ict with the focus being our bodies.

Year 3/4

Students this term will interact with peers and teacher to exchange information. They will participate in interactive stories, making simple statements to identify and compare favourite characters and elements. Students will share a story about an anime character with the younger year levels using ict to create and share their work.

Year 5/6

This term the students will interact with peers and teachers to describe apects of their life and show interest in and respect for others. They will convey information about themselves using oral/digital presentations. They will learn to understand that different ways of using Japanese language shape and reflect different relationships, such as deciding to be formal or informal.

Year 7
Students will interact with others to share interests and experiences, exchange information and express opinions and feelings. The students will interact in whole class and small group activities, responding to questions. They will present information using different modes of presentation to suit different audiences. The students will be able to explain variations in Japanese language use that reflect different levels of formality, authority and status. The students will create a range of texts to share information about themselves.

I look forward to sharing with you our Japanese language learning journey!

Sensei Davey

Tea ceremony with Reiko

Our year 3/4 classes had the privilege of participating in a tea ceremony with Reiko sharing the art of a Japanese tea ceremony. The students were engaged in all aspects of the ceremony although many found the tea very bitter! This opened up a discussion on cultural tastes and how Vegemite is perceived by many non Australians! Thank you Reiko.

Our wonderful Year 3/4 classes made obento today. They had a great time designing and then creating their obento. They were all very creative and worked hard on their obento. Students learnt about obento and applied these principles to their own creations. They also made sure they said “itadakimasu” before they ate to give thanks for the meal. Thank you to all the families who donated food for our obento making.

SA STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS 2014

Our students were lucky enough to compete in the Language Perfect State Championships this week. From the beginning our students showed so much enthusiasm and school pride to try and beat the other schools competing. Many would come to school and let me know they had worked on Language Perfect at home and I could hear students talking about the competion during their lunch breaks. Please find below the official results for our school.

It is interesting to note that the schools ahead of us in the competition were high schools and had almost double the amount of students, so to come fourth is an amazing achievement and it puts us as the top primary school in the competition. Yoku dekimashita!
